COURSE DESCRIPTION – Language, Identity, and Global Citizen Course, Summer Course

The Language, Identity, and Global Citizen Course is  offered by the University of Alicante during the month of July. The program consists of  elective courses conducted in English or Spanish for 6 or 12 ECTS credits (3-6 American credits). Courses offered include courses related to Global citizenship, language, identity and critical literacy in a globalized world.

DETAILED COURSE DESCRIPTIONS

Intensive Spanish Course – Designed for people who want to learn Spanish quickly and effectively. From A1 (Absolute beginner – Novice low) to C2+ (Mastery – Distinguished), 12 levels offered: two sublevels for each Level of the European Framework to guarantee you make the most of your stay, taking the course that exactly fits your needs and level.

Spain, Europe and the Mediterranean – Are you interested in the culture, politics and social issues of the European Union and its connections to the Mediterranean area? What is Spain’s role? This is a course, in English, about this fascinating intercultural reality. You can immerse yourself in the socio-cultural aspects of the EU, Spain and the Mediterranean, and develop a critical understanding of the role of Spain and the EU in the world. Language of instruction is English.

Intercultural Communication in Professional Contexts – This course is fully taught in English, and is designed to develop intercultural communication skills to enhance your performance in professional or academic contexts. The course focuses on facilitating strategies to understand and act effectively in intercultural encounters, with a dynamic, non essentialist view of culture in mind, and taking into account not just individual competence and attitudes, but also environmental, contextual influences in a pluricultural, globalized society. Language of instruction is English.

Gender, Language, and Power – This course is aimed at international students interested in analyzing gender relations in society and discussing the media’s approach ton this matter, as well as studying the socio-cultural consequences that this approach entails. The aim of the course is to provide students with the necessary analytical tools to develop critical thinking and to reflect on the construction of masculinity and femininity in contemporary media. Language of instruction is Spanish. Minimum Spanish level required is B1 (intermediate Spanish).

Contemporary Spain – Society, Politics, Institutions – A Spanish culture course with a focus on politics and social issues, for those who want to know more about current issues and problems in Spanish society. Discover the complexity and richness of contemporary Spain, while building on critical literacy to analyze and understand social and political processes taking place in Spain and their connections with the world stage, especially with students´ own countries and cultural contexts. Language of instruction is Spanish.

 

WHO CAN PARTICIPATE?

Open enrollment, anybody can participate. The Spanish program at the University of Alicante is open to teens, students, and adults. You do not have to be a college student to enroll in this Spanish program. You do not have to participate in a US university study abroad program to enroll in this Spanish program. Minimum age 18.

ABOUT

The Centro Superior de Idiomas of the University of Alicante organizes intensive Spanish language courses for teens, students, and adults. Spanish courses are offered throughout the year at all levels of Spanish, from beginner Spanish to advanced Spanish. Our Spanish language programs are open enrollment programs. Teens, students, and adults can enroll directly into our Spanish courses.

SERVICES OFFERED

Activities: Free and paid exra-curricular and cultural activities are offered, including:

  • Cultural excursions to the major Spanish cities such as Granada, Barcelona, Sevilla, Valencia, Salamanca, Toledo and Madrid
  • Aquatic activities, such as snorkeling in Tabarca, windsurfing, kayaking, and sailing
  • Language exchanges
  • Cultural visits to places of interest throughout the Province of Alicante such as  Altea, Benidorm, Elche, Calpe, and others
  • Dancing courses, such as Flamenco
  • Cookery courses and castronomic cctivities such as Tapas & Spanish Cookery, Paella, Wine tasting courses and Winery Visits

Housing:

Shared student apartments: We have an extensive database of shared flats whose owners accommodate students at the University of Alicante, Spanish and/or other international students. All flats have internet connection and they are localized in the center of Alicante and within easy access of the Campus. Prices depend on the characteristics of the apartment, ranging from € 230 / $ 243.36 * to € 300 / $ 317.43 * per month per room (individual), not including expenses, (water, electricity, gas, etc.)

Homestays with Spanish families: All our families are localized in the center of Alicante and within easy access of the Campus by public transport. Homestays cost € 25 / $ 26.45 * per day, half board, € 27 / $ 28.57 * per day, full board.
